Private cloud engineering

Private cloud when sovereignty or latency dominate

A private cloud is API-driven, automated infrastructure on environments you or a trusted sovereign partner operate: not a rebranded legacy datacentre. Built with the same IaC discipline as public cloud, it stays defensible for regulated data, predictable steady-state spend, or workloads pinned next to plants and edge sites.

We design, build and run private cloud platforms on VMware, Nutanix, OpenStack and bare-metal Kubernetes: and integrate them with the public cloud where it makes sense, so your developer experience stays consistent across both.

When private cloud earns its keep

  • Data sovereignty or regulation that pins workloads to a specific jurisdiction.
  • Latency-critical workloads sitting close to industrial systems or edge locations.
  • Predictable, steady-state workloads where reserved on-prem capacity beats elastic cloud.
  • Strategic exit options when over-reliance on a single hyperscaler is a board-level concern.
Our approach

How we engineer private cloud platforms

Cloud-style operating model, on infrastructure you control.

Platform design

Compute, storage and network designed as a product: self-service, API-driven, automated. VMware vCloud / vSphere, Nutanix, OpenStack or bare-metal Kubernetes, chosen on fit, not fashion.

IaC & automation

The same Terraform and Ansible patterns we use on public cloud, applied to private environments. Infrastructure becomes code, even on metal.

Hybrid integration

Identity, network, observability and CI/CD spanning private and public cloud. Workloads and engineers move between the two without switching tools or learning twice.

Outcomes

What modern private cloud gives you

Not "the old datacentre with a wrapper": a real cloud-style platform with sovereignty and predictability built in.

  • Sovereignty & control: data and workloads stay where regulation requires.
  • Predictable economics: fixed capacity for steady workloads, no bill surprises.
  • Low-latency access: proximity to factories, hospitals, retail or edge.
  • Same developer experience as public cloud: IaC, GitOps, self-service.
  • Strategic optionality: credible exit or fall-back from any single hyperscaler.
  • Compliance evidence: audit trail and policy-as-code at parity with public cloud.
Use cases

Where customers ask us to help

Sovereign & regulated workloads

You need data residency or regulatory compliance that the public cloud can't satisfy on its own.

Datacentre modernisation

Your existing on-prem footprint works, but the operating model is from another decade. We modernise without ripping everything out.

Hybrid by design

You operate in both private and public cloud and want a single developer experience across the two.

Why The Factory

Cloud-native engineering, on the infrastructure you choose

On-prem and hyperscale

Our engineers don't take sides. Same automation discipline whether the workload runs on VMware or AWS.

Compliance-aware

ISO 9001, ISO 27001, and NEN 4400-1 certified. Sovereignty and audit are not retrofitted.

Operate or transfer

Run-it-with-us or run-it-yourself. We're equally happy with both.

Our Private cloud consultancy across the Netherlands

The Factory is a Dutch cloud consultancy based in Rijswijk (Zuid-Holland). We work with organisations across the Randstad (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Eindhoven), and with customers elsewhere in the European Union. Our architects and platform engineers operate in Dutch and English, with experience on AWS, Azure, and hybrid environments.

  • Based in Rijswijk: on-site across the Randstad, remote elsewhere in the EU
  • NEN 4400-1, ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certified
  • Bilingual delivery in Dutch and English
  • EU data residency, NIS2, DORA, and GDPR factored into the design
Who we work with

Mostly mid-size and enterprise organisations across the Netherlands: in financial services, public sector, healthcare, education, industry, and SaaS. Engagements range from a short cloud assessment to long-running managed cloud operations.

We'll evaluate your private environment (or your private-cloud ambitions) and the case for hybrid: and come back with a sequenced modernisation plan.

Behind every assignment

The same engineers stay on the work.

  • Documented decisions. Architecture, trade-offs, and runbooks live in the same repository as the code: reviewable on day one and on day 200.
  • Monthly WTF sessions. Engineers walk through customer work, technical deep-dives, experiments, and what didn’t work. What The Faqtory!: our standing internal review.
  • Standing learning investment. Active Pluralsight and A Cloud Guru access, certification time, and study agreements where the depth justifies it.

The point isn’t novelty. The point is that two years in, the platform still makes sense to the people running it. Read about our engineering culture
